Raised Garden Beds
Discover functionality, design and stylish appeal with our selection of raised garden beds here.
As a general rule, ten square metres per person are required to supply most of your fresh vegetable needs. Your harvest will vary with the seasons and so what you need from your fruit and veg shop will vary accordingly.
Of course not everyone has a huge back yard in which to grow food and our job is to design and install food gardens that will maximise your available space and suit your budget.
Call us at Vital Veggies to discuss your needs. We're very helpful.
In-ground garden beds
Many people consider an in-ground garden bed to be the most economical way to start a vegetable garden. A successful vegetable garden depends on good soil so to prepare for an in-ground garden, earth must be excavated and new soil spread over. Although this seems the easiest and most economical way to go, there are a few disadvantages:
- There is no structure to hold the soil in place
- You need to bend down to work in your garden and harvest your veggies
- An in-ground garden is more vulnerable to attack by pests such as slugs and snails
- You often must walk on and compress the soil to pick your vegetables
- An in-ground garden is easily accessible to dogs, cats and wildlife

Timber raised bed gardens
If you want a natural look for your garden, a timber garden bed is unbeatable.
Eco soft wood raised garden beds
These raised bed gardens are made from plantation softwood, Pinus Radiata from the South East of South Australia.
Although the greenish tinge of the Ecowood timber looks similar to pine that is treated with copper chromium arsenic (CCA), the chunky softwood Ecowood sleepers are free of this toxic metal and are instead treated with the very latest in enviro sensitive preservatives to ensure a long, durable life in your garden. The timber is certified to comply with Australian Government regulations for holding soil and growing food.
All fixtures are suitable for outdoor use.
Ecowood beds are economical and attractively finished to give you years of gardening pleasure.
You can expect at least 20 years of productive functionality from your Ecowood raised garden bed.
Karri hard wood raised garden beds
For a raised garden bed that will last a lifetime, hard wood Karri timber beds are a worthwhile investment. Their reinforced joins and attractive reddish colour that fades to silver grey will complement any garden setting. You can expect at least 40 years of productive functionality from your beautiful Karri hard wood raised garden bed.
Garden bed sizes
We recommend the width of a garden bed to not exceed 1.2m so you can easily reach the veggies in the centre from both sides.
The height of a garden bed can be 20cm (low), 40cm (medium) or 60cm (medium-high) or 80cm (high), depending again on your needs and your budget.
The higher the bed, the less you have to bend down.
